Right now, I am singing the hook from that legendary hit by Eve. It hits me in a funny yet emotional way as I look at the photo. My blurred-out beer is in the hands of one of my best friends. Since it's not a paid spot, I am not promoting the brand. But real talk, it's a brand for what people would now call "the real ones." The ladies in this photo are part of my journey at Temple University—a journey in search of "that girl" with the candy-cane-striped suit and the wide smile.
This weekend is homecoming for my beloved Temple University, a place that represents the grit, the resilience, the challenges, and the triumphant moments of life. Located in a place where life comes at you fast and sometimes can be unforgiving, it is also a place where you catch a dream and never let it go. The cherry and white Temple U colors in this picture remind me of the pride I had then and now, not only to represent my school but on a far deeper level, to represent my family who believed I could do it, despite being 1520 miles from my home. Yet it felt like home from the first day I stepped into my dorm at Jones Hall.
So, shout out to all who look into a mirror and ask, "Who's that person?" and find yourself happy with the answer, mistakes and all. Like this brown bomber, I think I borrowed from my boyfriend. Happy Homecoming, Temple. I chose you, and I am happy to be accepted.
